Issue 9 is a tender and personal issue, dealing with some pretty big topics. Our special is dedicated to Sustainability, and you can also find essays by triathletes and grief councillors, dog rescue veterans and environmentalists.
Just like our cover, this issue reflects on the deep bond we have with our dogs.
The cover images was taken by photographer and environmentalist Debra Bardowicks, whose beautiful work features twice in this issue. We used her images from the famous Territorio de Zaguates for the lead article on sustainability, asking whether our relationship with the 900 million dogs on this planet can go on like this.
Debra herself shadowed sniffer dogs in Hawaii as they train for ever invasive species. The Sustainability section also looks at ways to lower your dog’s food carbon pawprint as well as the textiles we buy for our pooches.
There is lots more, of course: triathlete Louise Harris delivers a whirlwind of an essay about her attempt to break a world record and raise funds for Galgos del Sol on the way. Grief councillor Saskia Saunders confronts anticipatory grief from both a personal and professional viewpoint. Nowzad’s Pen Farthing writes about the aftermath of Operation Ark and his upcoming book on the evacuation from Afghanistan, in 2021. And vet Janey Lowes tells us how she ended up in Sri Lanka and founded WECare Worldwide.
There is also a great interview with RSPCA Director of Policy, Prevention and Campaigning Emma Slawinski, and photographer An di Prima shows us dog-centric Glasgow and beyond.
