Your Complete Stampede Insider's Guide for First-Timers

Yeehaw! Or should we say Yahoo!
  • Quick 15-minute read

It’s the most wonderful time of the year in Alberta… that’s right, Stampede season!

Calgary's streets are filled with cowboy boots, hats, and free pancake breakfasts galore. As well-seasoned Stampede aficionados, we have a few tips and tricks to help you make the most of your visit and create unforgettable memories. It's time to dust off those cowboy boots and get Stampede-ready.

01.

Planning & Logistics

There is so much to do and see during Stampede that the best thing you can do is plan ahead.

We know, we know, planning can feel tedious, but taking a little time to organise your days in advance will make your experience so much more enjoyable.

Stampede Park is large, busy, and packed with attractions, so having a game plan goes a long way.

The Calgary Stampede app is also worth downloading to help keep track of schedules and make sure you don't miss something you've been waiting all year to see.

02.

Tickets & Entry Fees

There are plenty of different costs associated with Stampede, from park admission to ticketed events and shows.

You can pre-purchase park admission (highly recommended to avoid extra line-ups) or buy tickets on arrival.

INSIDER TIP: Several days throughout Stampede offer free admission , so it's worth checking the schedule if you're flexible with your dates. Entry to Stampede Park is also included with some event tickets, such as the Rodeo and Evening Show. If you're attending over multiple days and want to experience every

03.

The Evening Show

They don't call it the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth for no good reason.

The Evening Show is a true spectacle and one of our must-see recommendations. It's incredibly popular, especially on weekends, so booking ahead is a good idea. You can often find deals through resale sites such as StubHub if official tickets are sold out on your desired day.

The show features the famous Chuckwagon Races, First Nations Relay Races (genuinely heart-stopping to watch), and a full-scale musical and entertainment production that feels Broadway-worthy. The night finishes with an incredible fireworks display that lights up the Calgary skyline.

INSIDER TIP: Seats midway up the grandstand are the sweet spot. You'll get some shade during the earlier part of the evening while still having a fantastic view of the Sky Show later on.

04.

Many of the world's top rodeo athletes consider Calgary Stampede their favourite event of the year. From bull riding and bronc riding to barrel racing and steer wrestling, it's action-packed from start to finish. Rodeo tickets are extremely popular, so booking in advance is highly recommended.

INSIDER TIP: Sitting slightly higher up in the stands often gives you better shade, great views, and a lower ticket price.

05.

Music and Calgary Nightlife

Music lovers, now is our time. Calgary is often overlooked on North American tours, so take advantage of Stampede season and catch some of music's biggest stars right here in your home city.

Stampede season brings major international acts to Calgary, with performances throughout Stampede Park at venues like the Saddledome and Big Four Roadhouse , as well as countless concerts and parties across the city. Popular tent experiences like Cowboys Music Festival and Badlands Music Festival always attract huge crowds.

06.

FREE EVENTS

A few days at Stampede can add up fast, and some of the best entertainment at Stampede doesn't have to add to your bill.

The Coca-Cola Stage features an impressive mix of emerging artists and established performers throughout the week, with no additional ticket required. Monster Energy's freestyle motocross shows, the Dog Bowl , the Nutrien Western Event Centre, the Stampede Showband, and First Nations activations and so much more.

INSIDER TIP: Don't overlook the Cutting Horse competitions at the Nutrien Western Event Centre . Watching horse and rider work cattle up close is seriously impressive… It's also a great place to escape the heat and enjoy a shorter beer line.

07.

Transportation

Parking can be challenging during Stampede, so we strongly recommend using Calgary's C-Train whenever possible. It's affordable, convenient, and drops you right near the grounds.

If you're using a rideshare service, consider getting dropped off a few blocks away and walking the rest of the way.

You'll avoid sitting in traffic, save money on surge pricing, and probably arrive faster too.

08.

Dress the Part

If you're wondering whether people really go all out for Stampede, the answer is absolutely yes.

Embrace your inner cowpoke. Cowboy hats, boots, denim, fringe, and western shirts are all part of the experience. And remember: there is no such thing as too much denim during Stampede. Double denim? Rookie numbers. Quadruple denim is where it's at.

Not only will you fit right in, but you'll feel fully immersed in the Stampede spirit.

09.

Indulge in Stampede Food

No Stampede experience is complete without sampling some midway food .

From deep-fried classics to bizarre annual creations, there is something for every appetite. Grab some mini donuts, try the deep-fried Oreos, and if you're feeling adventurous, seek out one of the year's viral food creations. Bring a few snacks of your own too. Line-ups can be long, the heat can be intense, and midway food prices can add up quickly.

INSIDER TIP: If the food is your main gig, consider heading to the park on Thursday evening. Line-ups are almost non-existent, meaning you can sample some of the most popular foods without having to set aside part of your day lining up.

10.

Don't Miss the Parade

The Calgary Stampede Parade officially kicks off the festivities and is one of the city's most beloved traditions.

Featuring marching bands, elaborate floats, cultural performances, and hundreds of horses, it's a spectacle worth experiencing. The parade is traditionally led by a celebrity Parade Marshal on horseback. In recent years we've seen Shania Twain and Kevin Costner trotting through the streets of Calgary.

INSIDER TIP: Follow the parade to the grounds and enjoy free admission on opening day between 11:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

Stay Hydrated and
Wear Sunscreen

Calgary's summer sun can be intense, and you'll likely spend long hours outdoors.

If the heat starts getting to you, head into the BMO centre for some well earned air conditioning, check out the market stalls, fashion archives and artists showcasing their western works .

Bring a reusable water bottle and take advantage of the free refill stations located throughout the grounds. And don't forget sunscreen , a cowboy tan is one thing, but a Stampede sunburn is another.

12.

Free Pancake Breakfasts
Throughout the City

You can't walk a block during Stampede without stumbling across a free pancake breakfast. Check out this handy resource , updated every year with the latest free breakfast locations across the city.

Not all heroes wear capes, some wear cowboy hats!

One Final Insider Tip

Stampede is what you make of it.
Whether you're there for the rodeo, concerts, food, nightlife, agriculture, or simply people-watching, lean into the experience. Say yes to the pancake breakfasts, try the weird midway food, wear the cowboy hat, and embrace the western spirit.

Trust us, you'll be planning next year's Stampede before this one is even over.
